Book Self Publishing Step-by-Step
There are many of us that enjoy writing but all of us may not have the resources available to get the book published. In fact, book self publishing has become more and more popular simply because people want to get their work out their but they don't necessarily have the money to spend on the publishing. Even though this can take some additional time for a person to accomplish, it certainly can be done and some people have been quite successful with publishing their own work. How is self publishing accomplished?
The publishers that would take care of your work really are only three different companies, Random House, Penguin and Simon & Schuster. If you are able to go with one of these publishers they can certainly help you to be able to get your work done in a short period of time. One of the reasons that they can do this is because they have a lot of clout in the publishing industry as well as a long line of people waiting to take care of their work for them. This may seem like bad news for those who are into book self publishing but, in fact, there are plenty of small companies out there that are willing to work with individuals as well.
The first thing that you're going to need to take care of is the editing of your book. Many people attempt to do this themselves, and it certainly is possible, but you're going to have to make sure of several different things. First, there needs to be some continuity in your work which includes fonts, page numbers and image location. You will also need to have the book proofread and to make sure that the finished product does not have any visual flaws, such as a single word left over on one page. After the editing is done, then you must move on to the printing process.
A book publisher may have the printing process done as an individual step but you may want to go with a company that handles both the printing in the binding of the book. If you are a new author, you may want to take advantage of a service that some of these printers offer which is known as print on demand. Some of us just may not need tens of thousands of these books printed out at one time, and the expense can be staggering. It is much better for us to go with a print on demand publisher and just have them keep our book on file and print it in small runs whenever that is needed. So if you feel a need to write creatively, self-publishing may be the way for you to go until you become well established. Not only will it save you a lot of money by not going with the publisher, your royalties will be much higher as a result. It's a good experience for you to know everything that goes on after the work leaves your hands and ends up in the bookstore. Knowing the process will help you to work with your publisher in the future, once you are established enough to hire one. |
